Recipe Scrapbooking

Personal recipe scrapbooks are a priceless gift to anyone. They are an especially nice gift to a future daughter-in-law or a daughter getting married. A recipe scrapbook shows caring, love, and a desire to share a part of yourself. For those of us who enjoy cooking and sharing recipes, a recipe scrapbook is truly a gift of love.

First start small. You don’t want to overwhelm the new bride by giving her a book of every recipe that you have ever tried. Choose the recipes that are truly family favorites or recipes that have been handed down through the ages. You want to choose a book with dividers so that you can organize the book by food type. You probably will want to include a Table of Contents to make finding a recipe easier. The easier the book is to use, the more the new bride will turn to it for help.

If you have any recipes in your own handwriting or the handwriting of family members, make copies of these for the book. This makes the book so much more personal. If family members are still alive, ask them to write out recipes for you to include in the book. If your handwriting is not easy to read, feel free to type. There is nothing wrong with a typed recipe scrapbook.

Before you put any recipes in the book, start your organizing process. Put all of the recipes on a large table, organize them by food type, and either add or subtract according to need. Try to keep a nice selection of each food type. If you have holiday favorites, you might make that an additional category. Remember this is your recipe scrapbook. There are no wrong ways to accomplish your task.

When all of your recipes are arranged and ready, begin to put them in your book. If you happen to have a picture of a particular recipe, that is a perfect addition. If you don’t, no problem, decorate with stickers or art work. After you have mounted all of the recipes and decorated the pages, it is time for helpful hints.

Helpful hints are all of those things you learned the hard way about cooking, like take out the insides of a whole turkey before cooking or make sure the oven is on before you forget and put in the roast. Any funny stories will help the new bride understand that everyone makes mistakes in the kitchen and laughs about them later.

Hopefully, the gift of a recipe scrapbook will be a special one to the recipient. If she seems really pleased with the gift, you might add pages later on if you come across a recipe that was particularly good. Even if the bride-to-be never plans to cook, she will treasure the recipe cookbook because it was made with love.
